County Championship to coroczna rugby konkurencja w Anglii między zespołami reprezentującymi różne powiaty . Utworzony w 1889 roku , zrestrukturyzowany w 2007 roku , najwyższy poziom mistrzostw hrabstwa jest również nazywany Bill Beaumont Cup , nazwa nadana na cześć Billa Beaumonta , byłego kapitana drużyny Anglii i British Lions . Drużyny rywalizują również o County Championship Shield i County Championship Plate .

Historycznie, Puchar Hrabstwa rozgrywany przez kluby oraz Mistrzostwa Powiatu rozgrywane przez drużyny hrabstwa przez długi czas były jedynymi rozgrywkami organizowanymi poza tradycyjnymi mityngami klubowymi ( Puchar Anglii powstał w 1971 roku, a mistrzostwa w 1987 roku).

Organizacja

W 1896 r. System z trzema grupami (północną, południowo-wschodnią i południowo-zachodnią) umożliwił podział drużyn według kryterium geograficznego. Następnie zwycięzcy zmierzyli się ze sobą w tabeli pucharowej. W 1921 roku zespoły podzielono na 5 grup, a następnie na 4 grupy od 1949 roku.

W 2008 roku zmieniono format zawodów, aby uczynić mistrzostwa bardziej atrakcyjnym. Osiem najlepszych drużyn jest klasyfikowanych do Dywizji 1, Dywizji 2 lub Dywizji 3.

Dywizje 1 i 2 gościły po 8 drużyn, podzielonych na dwie grupy (północną i południową) po 4 drużyny. W trzeciej dywizji pozostały drużyny (od 10 do 14 w zależności od roku) podzielone na pule 3 lub 4 drużyn.

Od 2011 roku mistrzostwa są redukowane do Dywizji 1 i 2 z systemem spadkowym.

Gracze mogą kwalifikować się do gry w hrabstwie na podstawie kilku kryteriów: miejsca urodzenia, zamieszkania lub drużyny, w której grali w poprzednim sezonie.
